Snap-on Tools product is the envy of mechanics and auto technicians the world over, and personalising your tool kit is one way to clearly stand out in the workshop.

Snap-on Tools Australia and New Zealand has opened a design competition looking for a leading design, illustration or creative treatment to apply to a limited edition tool box for launch in 2015. The lucky designer will also secure their design on their own tool box, worth up to AU$4,000.

“Snap-on Tools is known internationally for producing some of the world’s leading tool box skins and decals, and we like to see our customers express themselves through the product they collect. We are an international brand with a strong American heritage, of which we are very proud,” explained Steve Jones, National Marketing and Sales Manager. “Now we’re looking for our own local spin on a tool box design, something specific to the Australian and New Zealand market.”

The competition comes on the heels of the renowned American cartoon artist ‘Dirty Donny’ Gillies signing up with the US arm of the business to draw a character who epitomises the brand. Edgy and grungy, Gillies’ character is shown riding on a hotted-up Snap-on truck and ready for anything. The artwork has become so popular in the US that some mechanics have gone way beyond putting up the posters in the workshop – they’ve got tattoos of the illustration as well as the Snap-on logo.

“We’re looking for our own Donny Gillies, someone who understands the power of having a personalised and limited edition tool box,” said Steve.

The competition is live as an app on the Snap-on Tools Australia and New Zealand Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SnaponToolsAustralia) and will be open until the 15th August 2014. Mobile site can be found at https://www.tabsite.com/smrt195671

“We’ve already had some interesting designs – some hand drawn, others photographic. We are looking for innovation, creativity and something that truly reveals passion for the Snap-on brand,” explained Steve. “We are really urging anyone out there with an idea to share it with us – our designers will refine it and make it work on the panels of a tool box, so you don’t have to provide finished artwork!”

A selection panel at Snap-on Tools is looking forward to sifting through the designs and selecting the one that will work the best across three tool box panels, but the wider community is also being urged to vote for their favourite design.

“Snap-on Tools Australia might be selecting the overall winner, but we are leaving it up to the community online to vote for their personal fave,” said Steve. “The winner of the People’s Choice award stands to win an air hockey table worth AU$1,700, so it’s worthwhile getting your designs in.”
