Description
1972 Ford XY GT Fairmont. For sale from our Sydney Showroom.
Rhino or Super Roo...What are the differences?
Not many when it comes down to it.
The South African assembled, Australian built XY GT Fairmont was endowed with the exact same running gear as their Aussie brother. A 351 4V Cleveland, 4 speed Top Loader gearbox or FMX T-Bar auto and the bullet proof 9" LSD. Sure the name plate was different (they already had a Falcon badged car in South Africa), the GT striping was slightly different incorporating a Rhinoceros over the Aussie Kangaroo and Joey, the interior featured a KPH speedo, the seat trim and door cards were Futura style and a lot of GT Fairmonts were optioned with vinyl roofs which was a very popular option in SA at the time.
However, at the heart of these cars, they were more alike than not.
And in fact, South African car enthusiasts were just as excited about the XY GT as their Aussie mates snapping up even more XY GT Fairmonts than we did here in Australia (1,800 SA GTs vs. 1,557 Aussie GTs).
Returning to an XY GT hungry Australia in 2016, this beautiful nut and bolt restored Diamond Blue factory 4 speed manual example has covered a genuine 1,558 Klms since the restoration The GT retains the matching numbers 351 D block Cleveland 4V which was reconditioned, blueprinted & balanced. The GT runs a Holley 650 Carburettor, Stainless Steel 2.5 inch exhaust, alloy shaker and 4V outlet and inlet manifold. During the restoration the following were reconditioned or replaced including the power steering, wiper motor, washer bottle, brake booster and master cylinder. The 4 Speed Top Loader was fully reconditioned and a new clutch master cylinder and clutch pressure plate and flywheel fitted. The whole electrical system was reconditioned and a new FOMOCO radiator and all heater and radiator hoses fitted.
The suspension was fully restored with new ball joints, camber arms, tie rods, shocks, springs and bushes. The brakes got new rotors, callipers, pads, shoes and drums and the sway bar rubbers were replaced. Even the hand brake cable was changed. The GT springs were reset to the correct heights, with period correct shocks, a new tail shaft, new petrol tank and sender and new brake and fuel lines fitted. The 9" locker Diff was also reconditioned.
Paint and panel work were completed in South Africa prior to importation with new bumpers, driving lights, indicators, grille, over riders, tail lights, lenses, boot garnish all added in Australia. All stainless has been polished or replaced with new sill moulds, Trico wipers and 15" Bathurst Globe wheels fitted.
The interior has been retrimmed in the factory black Futura style coverings except for the door cards which are Aussie GT spec. The GT has been fitted with new carpets, roof lining, dash facia, crash pad, console, clock and gauges plus a new Rim-Blo steering wheel and Superfringe radio.
Ready to enjoy, the GT has been recently serviced with new leads, plugs, oils and filters.
This is a REAL GT with matching VIN plate on the radiator support and data plate under the driver's seat attached to floor.
Rhino or Roo? At the end of the day they are pretty much the same. And here is a great opportunity to purchase a fully restored and sorted GT at a huge savings over the price of its Aussie cousin.
Located in our Sydney Showroom. (Ref: 6492)
If you wish, we will gladly arrange a video tour of the car using WhatsApp and of course there is no issue with door to door freight delivery anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
