For sale from our Sydney Showroom is a superb quality tribute to the super rare early Shelby Mustang Convertibles.
Carroll Shelby built only four 1966 GT350 Convertibles. They are amongst the rarest and most sought-after of Shelby's high performance Mustangs. Powered by the 289 V8 and equipped with the Paxton Supercharger, these Shelby Mustangs were good for between 390-450hp and could surge from 0-60mph in under six seconds with top speeds over 150mph. The heart of the GT350 was the K-code hi-po 4V 289 V8, which was fitted with a solid lifter cam, adjustable rockers and four barrel carby plus a freer flowing exhaust.
Built by Peter Dout of Pete's Garage in Melbourne with assistance from Max Hayes of Vintique Moto, this Candy Apple Red Mustang has been built to faithfully replicate Shelby's '66 GT 350 at a cost of well over $250,000..
Peter Dout used a late model 302ci Windsor block, boosted to 331ci using Scat crank and rods, Mahle pistons, a special Comp Cams grind suited to the Paxton Supercharger. In addition are high flow Dart cylinder heads fed by a rare GT350 aluminium inlet manifold topped with a 650cfm Holley ported to cope with the boost from the blower.
Exhaust is via a set of Doug's Headers and twin 2 1/2" pipes. Power goes to the ground via a close ratio 4 speed Top Loader gearbox with Hurst shifter through to a factory K code 9" diff with 3.25 ratios. Braking is handled via factory Kelsey Hayes four piston calipers hooked up to a late Falcon brake booster (hidden in the front guard) and larger than stock rear drums and brake shoes.
On the inside, the Shelby GT350 is as per factory spec with black vinyl trim, sports wood grain steering wheel and a modern Dakota digital dash for 100% accurate readouts. The Convertible hood is electrically controlled with a dash mounted switch making this the ultimate summer cruiser.
The Mustang's suspension has been fully rebuilt, lowered to Shelby height specs with sturdy sway arms and quality adjustable Koni shocks all round. The right hand drive conversion is spot on and looks like it was factory installed. The underside has been fully detailed and finished with factory correct red oxide.
The Shelby GT350 is riding on period Magnum 500's with BF Goodrich 225/60R15 tyres.
The boot is also fully detailed with checker boot liner and a full sized spare.
The GT350 drives, handles and stops perfectly. This is a Mustang that can be driven all day, everyday with confidence. It turn heads and gets up and goes!
