Description
Rarely do you see a HG GTS 350 Monaro 4 speed come to market. Even rarer to find one as original as this one! Available for inspection from Auckland, NZ.
After 50 years of dedicated ownership, the owner of this spectacular and super rare 1970 HG GTS Monaro 350 has decided the time has come to sell his Monaro treasure. Presented in stunning Rally Red with Sandalwood trim combination, this HG GTS is one of the last HG Monaros built and is one of only 85 HG Monaro 350s equipped with the more powerful McKinnon block. Only 405 HG 350s were built - 141 autos and 264 manuals making this one rare lion.
Manufactured at the Dandenong, Melbourne GMH plant in November 1970, the Monaro was first registered in NZ on February 5, 1971 (see registration paperwork in photo gallery). The first owner was an American who worked at the American Embassy in Wellington and was an American GM fan who wanted the closest thing he could find to a Camaro. There were then another two private owners before the current owner purchased the car in July 1974 from Bowling Motors in Wanganui in the North Island of New Zealand with 39,000 miles on the clock. A photo showing the car on the yard back in 1974 is included as is the sales window display card that appeared in the window at the dealership.
This is a standout 350 manual GTS that features the never removed compliance plates, the 350 unique floor pressings to clear the Saginaw and large fuel tank, unique firewall and boot holes and the original Radius rod brackets. The matching numbers 350 motor has its original date coded heads, original Quadrajet carburettor, genuine air cleaner with extra breathing holes, original exhaust manifolds, fuel lines, and starter motor. The original fan and special 350 fan spacer are still in place. The original 350 radiator had a brand new core fitted in January 2024. Gears are swapped via the standard 350 Saginaw gearbox with high capacity bearings, original shifter assembly and bellhousing. The genuine 10 Bolt Chevy type LSD differential is there as are the radius rods, larger diameter orange tail shaft, 25 gallon long range fuel tank and the four branch exhaust.
The Monaro was repainted in 1975 in the original acrylic Rally Red after a relatively minor accident. The paint is showing some patina including some bubbling and crows feet but is good enough to come runner up in the Survivor Class at the February Concours at Ellerslie in Auckland this year. The car has also featured in Australian Muscle Car magazine and in NZ Autocar Magazine.
The matching numbers 350 Chevrolet motor was reconditioned in 2009 with everything in the engine bay being original except for the addition of electronic ignition. Of the two differentials available on the HG 350s - 3.36 to 1 and 3.08 to 1, this particular car is fitted with the 3.08 to 1 ratio diff. The Monaro has covered a genuine 121,428 miles from new.
The interior is day one with the exception of a retrim to the front seats in the original vinyl covering 3 years ago. Door cards, crash pad, dash fascia and steering wheel are all day one. All glass is in excellent condition and is all date code correct except for the front windscreen.
The Monaro's 14" steel rims are covered with genuine original Monaro hubcaps with red wall Firestone D70 tyres that are relatively new and have covered very few miles.
Open the boot and the GTS features the original fuel tank, boot mat, original jack and tools plus original slotted 350 spare rim with matching Firestone D70 tyre.
Having never been pulled apart, it is a very good reference car with so many original parts still in place.
The Ultimate SURVIVOR HG and a must have for the serious Holden or Monaro collection. They're only original ONCE!
