Garrett Summernats Slam Success

After 12 months of lockdowns and restrictions across Sydney and the nation, January 8th-10th saw the new strip at Sydney Dragway do its best to blow away the COVID-19 blues with the Garrett Advancing Motion Drag Day kicking off an epic weekend burning rubber, glistening paint and polished engines at the Summernats Slam 2021.

Despite all concerns surrounding the continual COVID-19 developments in Sydney, the event was a raging success across all metrics. More than 11,000 people through the gates over three days, 400 entrants and 13 trade and exhibitors created an amazing festival atmosphere. To be honest it was a blast to get back to an amazing event like this and be around some good people who have obviously been using their downtime to keep everything in the garage in top shape, ready for the next opportunity to push themselves and their vehicles to the limit down the strip at Sydney Dragway.

The new concrete strip has been beautifully ground to amazing new standards not before seen at Sydney Dragway which saw some amazing results achieved. Of course, in true Summernats style the weekend included plenty of action with skid row, burnouts, motorkhana, show ‘n’ shine, and awards giving the crowd plenty to enjoy.

The team from Garrett Advancing Motion were, of course, in attendance with not only their outstanding range of turbo chargers on show, but also their brand new van, fully kitted up with everything Garrett Advancing Motion – from their new G-series range of turbos through to a pile of Garrett merchandise.

The new van will be hard to miss moving forward this year at events, with the next event being the Garrett Sydney Jamboree 2021, which is booked in the calendar to go ahead on March 20 – should all go to plan and we all keep on top of the COVID-19 situation. Make sure to swing in and say g’day to the Garrett Advancing Motion team and check out the new van set up which will be touring Australia wide events moving forward. The idea is to have the latest and greatest turbos and products available, from the Garrett Advancing Motion range, for you to get up close and personal with, as well as any news on upcoming products and info you may require.

Garrett Advancing Motion Drag Day saw the new strip put to the test with 80 cars tearing up the quarter mile on Friday night. Winners of the drag racing competition categories were:

• Extreme – Mark Hinchelwood with the ACDELCO 2006 Holden Monaro running 5.899 seconds
• Modified Sportsman – Mark Hayes with his 1971 Holden LC Torana running 6.950 seconds
• Sportsman – Sean Maher with his 1969 Holden HB Torana running 9.318 seconds
• Extreme Street – Stan Nikitaras with his 1970 Ford Capri running 10.991 seconds
• Street Fighter – Steven Carlyon with 2003 Holden SS Commodore running 12.100 seconds.

Competition in the burnouts was fierce, with cars skidding three times over the two days. Clyntin Perry in his 2006 Ford Falcon Ute ONGROG took out third, Jono Murphy in his 1970 Toyota Corolla KE20 TUFF20 came second, and Jessie Johnson was the first Summernats Slam Burnout Champion in his 1985 Holden VK Calais KILLA-K! The burnout winners took away over $10,000 in prize money and certainly put an outstanding show on for the crowd.

The Show ‘n’ Shine was stunning, with the Top 10 awarded to Nick Chronopoulos, Jonathan Danaskos, Dave Dorman, Steve Friend, Mark Hayes, Simon Mokdassi, Peta Psaras, Timothy Saliba, Charlton Sherry and Daniel Wickman.

Jonathan Danaskos was the Summernats Slam Champion in his mint 1965 Ford Mustang, taking home $6,000 in prize money and products for his efforts and results in motorkhana, judging and grudge racing.

The Summernats and Sydney Dragway team are extremely happy with the Slam event. It was a great turnout of spectators and entrants who had a fabulous time, all while following the COVID-19 requirements. Event organisers look forward to incorporating Summernats Slam as a permanent event in the annual schedule in the future.
