Hyundai reveals hydrogen EV – the INITIUM FCEV

Hyundai has unveiled the INITIUM – a groundbreaking hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept.

This SUV-style concept vehicle not only previews Hyundai’s upcoming FCEV, set to launch next year, but also reflects Hyundai’s long-standing dedication to hydrogen as a clean energy source. The name INITIUM, meaning “beginning” in Latin, underscores Hyundai’s ambition to pioneer a sustainable hydrogen future.

Hyundai Motor’s clear, unwavering commitment to hydrogen over the past 27 years is rooted in our belief in its potential as a clean, accessible, and therefore fair energy source for everyone,” Hyundai Motor President and CEO Jaehoon Chang said.

“We are dedicated to pioneering a future where hydrogen is used by everyone, in everything, and everywhere.”

The INITIUM concept introduces Hyundai’s new ‘Art of Steel’ design language, developed by Head and Executive Vice President of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design SangYup Lee.

“With INITIUM, we’ve crafted a more SUV-like design that is both solid and safe, reflecting our dedication to our customers through ‘customer-centric design’,” Lee said.
“This design marries form and function, boasting bold lines, a rugged roof rack, and aerodynamic wheels that enhance its city and outdoor appeal.”

Key performance features include a driving range of over 650 km on a full tank, achieved through large hydrogen fuel tanks and low rolling resistance tires.

The INITIUM’s FCEV-specific route planner allows users to easily locate charging stations and check their availability, addressing a major concern for FCEV drivers. Enhanced fuel cell technology also enables up to 150 kW of electric motor output, ensuring smooth driving in both urban and highway settings.

The INITIUM also incorporates Hyundai’s Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature, allowing users to power household appliances directly from the car, turning the INITIUM into a portable energy source. With top-tier collision safety features, including a multi-skeleton front structure and nine airbags, Hyundai continues its commitment to safety.

Hyundai plans to showcase INITIUM at the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November, solidifying its position as a leader in hydrogen mobility.
