Maintaining motorcycle tips for summer from Bendix

For many bikers, year-round riding is an appealing idea. However, seasonal weather in Australia and New Zealand can limit ride time, leaving motorcycles stored for months in colder regions, or during the summer in hotter areas.

Here are essential pre-ride maintenance tips from Bendix to ensure a safe and smooth seasonal transition.

Fuel

Petrol has a limited shelf life—three to six months for regular fuel and slightly longer for high-octane variants. Old fuel can degrade and release gums into the system, so it’s best to drain the tank and refill with fresh fuel before setting off.

Brakes

Brake fluid is crucial for safe braking, transferring force from the brake lever to the calipers while also lubricating moving parts and dissipating heat. As brake fluid absorbs moisture, it should be replaced every 12-18 months to maintain performance. Inspect fluid levels and brake lines, and check for pad wear and rotor surface quality for optimal braking function.

Battery

A sitting bike may lose battery power over time, especially modern models with alarms or immobilisers. Consider using a trickle charger for maintenance, or recharge with a conventional charger if needed.

Oils

Checking engine oil levels and, for some models, transmission fluid is essential to keep components properly lubricated and free from contaminants.

Chain and Sprockets

After storage, it’s wise to clean and re-grease the chain for a smooth, quiet ride. Check for grime buildup and inspect sprocket teeth for wear.

Tyres

Check tyre pressures and look for flat spots, especially if the bike wasn’t on stands. Also, inspect for tread depth and cracks, especially if tyres are aging.

Lights and Indicators

Ensure all lights, indicators, and brake lights are functioning, as this is crucial for safety and roadworthiness.

Before hitting the road, a refresher course for both bike and rider can enhance the riding experience. Additionally, a check on riding gear ensures all-round readiness for the next adventure.
