Mathew at MTA NSW setting the training standard

When Mathew Hoban first stepped into the role of automotive trainer at MTA NSW in 2022, he brought with him over 15 years of experience on the tools and a deep belief that quality training can transform lives.

Based in Canberra and now the ACT’s Program Coordinator, Mathew is helping drive a training approach that is raising the standard across the region.

“I’ve always loved working with my hands and helping others learn. Becoming a trainer felt like a natural next step,” Mathew said. “I get to pass on the skills I’ve learned, but more than that, I get to help young people feel confident in what they do.”

Learn from the pros

What sets MTA NSW apart is its strong industry roots and highly personalised, one-on-one training model. As the peak body representing the automotive industry across the region, MTA NSW provides apprentices with training on the industry, by people working in the industry. All trainers, like Mathew, are tradespeople who live and breathe workshop life, bringing current, real-world insight into every lesson.

This highly specialised approach to training prepares learners for the realities of working in the industry – from understanding workshop culture and employer expectations to using up-to-date tools, technologies, and diagnostic systems found on the job. It means apprentices aren’t just ticking boxes in the classroom, with training tailored to their learning style and pace.

“Some of our learners come straight from school and need a bit of extra support adjusting to work life. Others are neurodivergent or just need training delivered differently,” he explains. “We meet them where they’re at – visually, verbally, practically – and adapt every session to suit.”

Tailored approach

From creating custom video playlists to bringing in real car parts for hands-on learning, Mathew goes above and beyond to engage every student. He’s even kept his phone on after hours for students who need extra help, something he said is part of his commitment to being a mentor, not just a teacher.

But it’s not just students who benefit from Mathew’s approach. Local employers are increasingly turning to MTA NSW because of the strong outcomes they’re seeing. “Employers know they’re getting apprentices who are workplace-ready because we’re constantly working with them to tailor our training to their needs,” said Mathew.

That includes aligning lessons with specific manufacturer tools and systems and incorporating employer feedback into assessment models. “It’s important to us that our courses are practical, relevant, and designed to set learners up to succeed,” he said.

Ready for the future

As the industry rapidly shifts, Mathew is also leading the charge on future-ready skills. He’s currently expanding into electric vehicle (EV) training and will soon be equipped to deliver EV training in the ACT – an important milestone as more workshops gear up for the next generation of vehicles.

In his dual role as program coordinator, Mathew also supports a growing team of trainers across the ACT and regional NSW. From mentoring and observing sessions to leading resource upgrades and compliance efforts, he’s helping to embed a culture of continuous improvement across the board.

Ultimately, everything Mathew does comes back to one goal: setting apprentices up for success.

“I want them to leave training not just qualified, but confident. I want them to be proud of their work, passionate about their future, and part of an industry that values their skills. That’s what drives me – and that’s what MTA NSW is all about.”
