Mechanic apprentices of 2025 aim higher than ever before

Mechanic apprentices of 2025 want far more than just a basic job “spinning spanners.”

Today’s young people entering the automotive industry are looking to build long-term careers with real purpose, growth, and leadership potential. They want to make an impact in their field – and the conditions of the industry are aligning to give them exactly that.

Our Apprentice Recruitment Managers have noticed a clear shift in the mindset of young applicants. The people coming forward for apprenticeships today are far more ambitious and focused than before.

They’re not looking at apprenticeships as a stopgap or a fallback option. Instead, they view it as a launchpad for a rewarding, future-focused career. Many have clear goals in mind and realistic plans to climb the ranks into leadership roles within the industry.

It’s also encouraging to see that these motivated individuals are coming from all walks of life and with varying academic results. Many apprentices identify as neurodiverse, and they are thriving in this field.

Their ability to think differently often leads to innovative problem-solving approaches that are proving especially valuable as the industry faces a new set of modern challenges.

Here to help

At ARU, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in the demand for automotive apprenticeships over the past few years. In the 2021–22 financial year, 103 people started their apprenticeship journey with us. That number grew to 142 the following year. And most recently, during the 2023–24 financial year, more than 240 individuals have taken the first step toward their careers with us.

The industry is experiencing an exciting shift that will add even more appeal. We are experiencing advancements in AI, machine learning, and sensor technology.  This all calls for fresh ways of working, new thinking and problem solving, something today’s apprentices are ready to offer.

Skilled mechanics are in high demand across Australia, and the attractive starting salaries reflect that need. With a solid foundation, today’s automotive apprentices are poised to become tomorrow’s industry leaders.

I am incredibly optimistic about the future of the Australian automotive sector, thanks to the talent, passion, and drive of the new generation entering the field.
