Motorcycle sales in Australia revealed

Motorcycle sales

Motorcycle sales in Australia took an interesting turn between January and June 2023, showing a glimpse into the broader state of the economy.
Stats from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) showed 45,085 motorcycles and off highway vehicles (OHV) were sold in that timeframe.

This was a decrease of 5.9 per cent on last year. Sales in OHV were up 7.6 per cent from last year with 8,151 sold.

Road motorcycles lead the stats with 17,432 sold. They were followed closely by off-road motorcycles who accounted for 37.4 per cent.
Both were down in sales compared to the same time last year, with decreases of four and 13 per cent respectively.

“It was significant to see the sales of road motorcycles exceeded the sales of off-road motorcycles during the first six months of the year,” FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said.
“Also of note was the six per cent decrease in scooter sales compared with this time last year noting that sales of scooters generally held firm during challenging economic times.”

Weber said wider economic pressures such as the cost of living and interest rate rises could be putting stress on the motorcycle industry.

“We will monitor the broader economic conditions and the potential for them to impact on sales across each of the market segments,” he said.
