New quiz to help combat rising car theft

Is your car safe from theft? That’s something Neighbourhood Watch wants to help find out.

In response to the alarming rise in vehicle theft across Victoria, Neighbourhood Watch, with the support of RACV, has introduced an online quiz titled How safe is my vehicle?

“Theft of motor vehicles in Victoria has increased by 41.5 per cent and theft from a motor vehicle has increased by 33.32 per cent in the last 12 months,” Neighbourhood Watch CEO Bambi Gordon said.
“Both figures represent a ten-year high.
“The How safe is my vehicle quiz puts practical prevention tools directly into the hands of vehicle owners, empowering them to take proactive steps to protect their vehicle.
“This initiative comes at a crucial time as vehicle-related crime continues to impact Victorian communities.”

This initiative aims to equip Victorians with the necessary tools to safeguard their cars and belongings from theft. Recent data from the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency reveals a dramatic surge in vehicle theft.

Over the past year, the number of stolen motor vehicles has risen by nearly 8,432 incidents, an increase of 41.5 per cent. Similarly, thefts from motor vehicles have spiked by almost 19,000, marking a 33.32 per cent rise. Both of these increases amount to a ten-year high.

The How safe is my vehicle? quiz is freely available and offers valuable advice, security recommendations, and step-by-step guidance to help vehicle owners protect their vehicles, including caravans. The report generated from this quiz includes:

  • Information about the latest anti-theft technologies
  • Best practices for secure parking
  • Practical tips to prevent theft from vehicles

“We’ve created a valuable resource that addresses a pressing community need aimed at making Victorian communities safer,” Ms Gordon added.

The initiative is bolstered by local Neighbourhood Watch volunteer groups, who will help raise awareness and provide hands-on guidance to community members, ensuring that Victorians feel more secure about their vehicle’s safety.
