Move over Navara, as Nissan unveiled the all-new Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid pickup truck at Auto Shanghai 2025.
This model, alongside the Dongfeng Nissan N7, is part of Nissan’s ambitious plan to introduce nine NEVs in China by summer 2027, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to enhancing its competitive edge through innovative technology.
Nissan will release the vehicles in select global markets a year after local release in China, opening the possibility for the Frontier Pro to enter Australia’s competitive ute market.
The Frontier Pro will be Nissan’s first plug-in hybrid and its first electrified pickup truck when it hits the market in China later this year. It seamlessly blends Nissan’s established pickup heritage with advanced powertrain technology, harnessing the expertise from China, the world’s leading NEV market. Designed for families, this five-seat, dual-purpose pickup caters to urban driving needs while facilitating weekend getaways.
Design
The Frontier Pro embodies the “Rugged Tech” concept, featuring a modern exterior that embodies sophistication and spaciousness within. Its illuminated Nissan logo on the front mask signifies the truck’s electrified capabilities.

The design showcases five LED elements that accentuate the vehicle’s width, with three central lights that pay homage to Nissan’s iconic 1980s D21 hardbody pickup. The design team in Shanghai drew inspiration from the classic three-slot hood opening, modernising it with advanced LED technology. All variants of this pickup rest on standard 18-inch alloy wheels with 265/65R18 tires.
Powertrain
The Frontier Pro is equipped with a robust plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine combined with a high-output electric motor. This system delivers over 300 kW of power and up to 800 Newton-meters of torque, balancing performance with efficiency. For domestic consumers in China, the Frontier Pro aims to achieve an impressive EV-only range of up to 135 km.
Drive and Features
Every Frontier Pro model comes standard with a 5-link rear suspension and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, optimizing torque distribution between the front and rear wheels for improved handling. Off-road capabilities are enhanced with an available electromechanical rear differential lock. Drivers can choose from four drive modes – Hybrid, Pure Electric, Performance, and Snow – allowing customisation for various driving conditions.
