Replacing rotors and pad together is better: Bendix

For many drivers, a visit to the mechanic is seen as a ‘grudge purchase’ – especially in today’s economic climate.

So when it comes time to replace brake pads, the suggestion to replace the rotors at the same time might seem unnecessary or overly cautious.

However, according to leading brake manufacturer Bendix, there are several important reasons why doing both together is a smarter – and ultimately safer – investment.

More than just pads wearing out

Bendix explains that brake pad and rotor wear rates can vary widely depending on driving habits, road conditions, vehicle usage, and the quality of components. As a general rule, brake pads can last between 50,000 and 100,000 kilometres, while rotors may last an additional 10,000 kilometres.

Given this, some drivers may be tempted to delay rotor replacement to save on short-term costs. But Bendix warns that safety and performance can be compromised by doing so.

Stretching out an extra few thousand kilometres from the rotors isn’t worth the risk. The rotor thickness or surface quality may not hold up until the next service, which could result in less effective braking.

New pads + old rotors = poor performance

One of the main risks of fitting new pads to old rotors, Bendix explains, is the condition of the rotor surface itself.

Over time, rotors develop grooves, scoring, and Disc Thickness Variation (DTV) – all of which can lead to uneven pad wear and reduced braking performance.

This often means that drivers who initially save money by not replacing rotors end up needing another set of pads sooner than expected – not to mention a second visit to the workshop.

You may end up with extra workshop visits, added labour costs, and more vehicle downtime. Replacing both at once is far more efficient and cost-effective in the long run.

Rotor Machining vs. Replacement In the past, machining (resurfacing) a rotor was a common solution. But Bendix points out that rising labour costs, especially if rotors need to be sent out to specialists, have made new rotors a more affordable and practical choice.

For performance or specialty rotors – such as slotted or dimpled types – Bendix cautions that machining can diminish their performance benefits, such as the ability to dissipate heat, gas, dirt, and water.

Avoiding mismatched brake components

Another issue Bendix highlights is the risk of mismatched parts when pads and rotors are replaced at different times or come from different brands.

There can be subtle differences in braking components between manufacturers, and mixing brands may lead to reduced performance, reliability, and longevity.
