More than one in eight Australian drivers admit they have never checked their engine oil, with seven percent who check it less than once a year, new research has found.
But the survey conducted by Supercheap Auto shows a third of people will be increasingly likely to change their habits because of cost-of-living pressures with Gen Z the most willing to put their head under the bonnet (62 per cent).

The survey found the rise of cost of living creates a financial burden when it comes to car maintenance for many Gen Zs, fuelling their aim to fix vehicles without the help of a mechanic.
83 percent of Gen Zs revealed they are likely to top up their engine oil at least once a year, with this percentage lowering in Millennials (72 percent), Gen X (68 percent), and Baby Boomers (65 percent).
Supercheap Auto Managing Director Benjamin Ward says it’s great to see younger Australians taking charge of car maintenance, whether that’s people who are lifting the bonnet for the first time, or those who are car enthusiasts.
“We know times are tough at the moment, and the last thing we want to see is a car with a long list of repairs that could have been avoided by a quick oil check and top-up,” he said.
“Having some basic skills when it comes to checking and changing your engine oil can save time and money.”
