Superkarts Racer Nick Schembri

Not too many people can profess to be a multiple national motorsport Champion by the age of 20, but Burson Auto Parts Superkarts racer Nick Schembri can.

Nick came to the attention of Australia’s preferred trade supplier of parts, tools, equipment and accessories when he won the Burson Auto Parts Motorsport Australia Rising Star Award in 2019, but his story starts quite a way before that.

The Burson Auto Parts ambassador started racing sprint karts at club level at ten years of age, then progressing to state and national levels. This saw the young racer hone his racecraft skills to win several local, state and national races along with titles events.

At 14 years of age Nick stepped into his first racing car, a Formula Ford, competing in the Victorian championship along with selected national rounds.

On reflection, this was probably a bit too young to make this progression and while he did consider making the move to the Formula 4 championship, the decision was made to return to karting, taking the next step up to Superkarts in 2017.

This proved to be the right decision as Nick became the 2018 125cc Victorian and Australian Superkart Champion simultaneously, a feat that earned him the Burson Auto Parts Motorsport Australia Rising Star award. Nick then set his sights on competing internationally, finishing a superb second at the 2019 British 125cc Superkarts Grand Prix.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is the fact that he was the youngest competitor taking part at just 16 years of age. According to the Burson racer, after trying many sports, the challenge of pushing himself to the absolute limit was what made him become a Superkart racer.

“I had played many sports and enjoyed them as a kid, but nothing compared to the individual challenge of racing Superkarts. Once you are out on the track you are completely on your own and you have to push yourself harder and harder, lap after lap. It’s a challenge that I have always loved about the sport,” Nick said.

“I’d really like to continue winning Australian Superkart championships all the way up to 250cc level and then race against the best in the world in the European championships, so there is a lot more that I want to achieve,” he added.

Along with his Superkart ambitions, Nick also likes the idea of taking part in some GT endurance races as a co-driver at events like the Bathurst 12 Hour and other local and international races, while also interested in the Supercars driver development category, Super2.

With the 2022 125ccc Gearbox Australian Superkart Championship added to Nick’s impressive trophy cabinet following yet another dominant performance at Victoria’s Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in August, this Burson Auto Parts racer is one to watch into the future.
