The importance of ignition coils and NGK’s optimum connection

Mechanics around the world have demanded NGK Spark Plugs for over 80 years, renowned for three key pillars: high quality, superior performance and reliability.

But while the spark plug is a critical component in the combustion process, it cannot operate in isolation.

The importance of ignition coils

The ignition coil plays a vital role in transforming the vehicle’s low battery voltage into the high voltage required to create a spark at the plug tip.

Without a precisely engineered coil delivering consistent voltage and pulse strength, even the most advanced spark plug cannot perform at its peak.

In modern engines, where tighter emission regulations and efficiency targets demand cleaner and more complete combustion, ignition system integrity is paramount.

“As ignition experts, we saw an opportunity to develop an Ignition Coil that perfectly complements the NGK Spark Plug to deliver ultimate ignition performance,” NGK Ignition Parts Product Manager Chantra Kriv said.

“Working with some of the best engineers in Japan, the NGK Ignition Coil has been designed and manufactured to meet technical demands and to deliver across the same three pillars.”

The ignition coil is the bridge between electrical energy and combustion performance. Its durability, resistance to heat and vibration, and ability to maintain precise voltage delivery directly impact acceleration, fuel efficiency, smooth idling and long-term engine reliability.

When spark plugs and ignition coils are engineered to work together, workshops can deliver a complete ignition solution rather than a standalone component replacement.

NGK Ignition Coils: The optimal connection

NGK is demanded by workshops for its high quality, superior performance and reliability. In 2015 NGK introduced Ignition Coils to complement its premium range of Spark Plugs, creating a complete ignition package built around technical precision.

Technical features that set the NGK Ignition Coil apart from the pack include:

  • Designed to perfectly match the highest functioning Spark Plug on the market
  • Precise engineering for correct seating
  • Excellent pulse strength durability
  • Exceptional short-circuit and moisture resistance
  • Superior thermal loads and vibration resilience
  • Optimal dimensioning of cooling surfaces for the heat dissipation and temperature stability

This attention to engineering detail ensures consistent energy transfer, correct fitment and long-term durability under demanding operating conditions.

Precise seating reduces the risk of misfires or energy loss, while strong pulse durability ensures reliable spark delivery even under load.

Enhanced resistance to moisture and short-circuiting protects against environmental stresses, particularly in harsh Australian conditions.

To achieve this commitment, all NGK Ignition Coils adhere to the high-quality standards of Niterra Japan, where every Ignition Coil is produced in strict compliance with OE specifications and processes.

Quality assurance is embedded throughout the manufacturing process, with every coil:

  1. Measured mechanically and electrically using laser guidance
  2. Subjected to on vehicle installation testing
  3. Undergoing a thermal shock and thermal cycle test that ranges from; -65 to 175 °C
  4. Tested for mechanical vibration durability, EMC and RFI compatibility
  5. Enduring a vacuum moulding process to ensure a blister-free encapsulation, preventing any potential electrical short-circuits

These rigorous testing protocols ensure each coil can withstand extreme temperature fluctuations, vibration stress and electromagnetic demands typical of modern vehicles. The vacuum moulding process, in particular, plays a critical role in preventing encapsulation defects that could otherwise compromise insulation integrity.

“NGK Ignition Coils are the perfect connection for NGK Spark Plugs, giving Australian vehicles a premium and complete ignition package that just makes sense,” Chantra added.

By offering coils engineered to complement NGK’s vehicle-specific spark plugs — designed in partnership with OEMs to suit individual engine requirements — workshops can confidently install components that are aligned in design philosophy, material quality and performance intent.

Niterra Australia and the NGK Legacy

Launched in Australia in 1980, Niterra Australia — which rebranded from NGK Spark Plug Australia in April 2023 – specialises in providing innovative solutions to the automotive and medical industries.

As the largest OE spark-plug supplier in the world, NGK works hand-in-hand with vehicle manufacturers during the development of each new engine configuration to engineer spark plugs specifically designed to suit each engine’s individual requirements and ensure optimum performance.

This vehicle-specific philosophy ensures critical attributes such as heat range, centre-electrode projection length, ground electrode configuration and advanced designs like Double Fine Electrode (DFE) and platinum square projection electrode (PSPE) are never compromised through commonisation.

NGK prides itself on providing the broadest range of replacement spark plugs designed and engineered for more than 98 per cent of vehicles on Australian roads.

In addition to an extensive catalogue of spark and glow plugs, Niterra also offers OE-quality technical sensors while distributing popular suspension brand KYB.

NGK and NTK products are all designed and manufactured in the same factories as the products supplied to NGK’s OE customers across Japan, Europe, North America, Korea, Thailand, China and other vehicle manufacturing regions.

This OE alignment ensures consistent standards in raw materials, processes and design integrity across both original equipment and aftermarket supply.

As emission regulations become increasingly stringent, NGK’s precious-metal spark plugs — using iridium and platinum with finer centre-electrode diameters — deliver superior ignitability, improved acceleration, smoother idling and improved fuel consumption.

When paired with NGK Ignition Coils engineered to the same high standards, the result is an ignition system built for efficiency, reliability and clean performance.

Niterra is proud to be considered a key partner to Trade, Reseller and Distribution businesses within the Australian aftermarket industry, with relationships built alongside Trade Repairers forming the cornerstone of its aftermarket business.
