Toyota pulls away in record car sales month

More than 100,000 cars were sold in a record-breaking month on car sales in Australia.
Sales figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) found 109,966 new vehicles were sold in Australia.

This is an increase of 15.4 per cent on 2022, which FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber says is a big step in the right direction.

“The Australian automotive sector continues to demonstrate its strength, with August recording unprecedented sales figures, reflecting both a high level of demand from Australians and improved supply of vehicles,” he said.
“Year-to-date sales have increased 9.9 per cent which is a better indicator of the underlying strength of the market.”

Toyota took two of the top spots with the Hi-Lux (5,762) and RAV4 (2,482) both selling well.
The Ford Ranger (5,760) also sold in the top three, showing again that Aussies are increasingly gravitating towards utes.

Sports utility vehicles are up 13,742 overall, as passenger vehicle sales dropped 3.3 per cent.
Electric vehicles and hybrids also experienced increases by a combined 16.9 per cent of total vehicle sales.

“As consumers continue to embrace low emissions technologies we are seeing growth in electric, plug-in and hybrid vehicle sales. More than 1 in 6 vehicles sold in the month of August featured low emissions technologies,” Weber said.
