The end of the financial year has a way of sneaking up on you when you’re flat out in the workshop… writes Jason Steporowski, General Manager – Membership & Sales, MTA NSW Group
Between managing staff, keeping customers happy, and staying on top of compliance, it can be easy to let the business and admin work slip or get pushed aside. As 30 June approaches, it’s worth taking a step back to ask: is my business ready for the new financial year, and are there any gaps?

Getting business-ready for the next financial year doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul.
Often, it’s about making sure the foundations that you have in place are still suitable and, importantly, the kind of things that protect you when things go sideways, as well as set you up to succeed across the year ahead.
Start with your people
Employment relations are one of the most common pressure points for trade businesses, and they’re only becoming more complex. Award rates, leave entitlements, termination procedures, and superannuation are something to keep on top of and getting them wrong can be costly.
Payday Super is just one of these examples this year that Small Businesses need to be across.
If you don’t have someone in your corner on this kind of work, it can be like operating without a safety net.
MTA NSW members have access to dedicated employment relations staff who can offer advice across the full range of HR and workplace matters.
Sort your WHS before it’s too late
Workplace health and safety compliance is non-negotiable in the trades, yet too often it’s approached reactively rather than as a strategic business priority.
As part of the MTA NSW Group, Motor Trades Care (MTC), helps businesses create value from health, safety and wellbeing outcomes, driving stronger performance in both Work Health and Safety (WHS) and Return to Work (RTW).
Through MTC, members gain access to free, industry-specific WHS and workers’ insurance information, as well as access to resources that include policies, procedures, and practical checklists and forms, empowering them to move from reactive compliance to proactive, high-performing safety practices.
Don’t overlook your legal exposure
Legal issues can arise unexpectedly.
They can look like a consumer complaint, a contract dispute, or a question about buying or selling your business. That is why having access to solid legal advice before a problem escalates is far better than scrambling once it does.
MTA NSW members can access legal support across areas including Australian Consumer Law, contracts, intellectual property, and insolvency.
Invest in your team’s skills
A new financial year is also a great moment to think about training.
MTA NSW is a registered training organisation (RTO), delivering industry-focused training.
With the global electric and hybrid vehicle market expected to grow significantly in the coming years, you need to be prepared, which is why we offer safety training relevant to all auto professionals, and a course in Battery and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Inspection and Servicing.
As you look ahead to the new financial year, it’s worth asking whether you have the right support around you. If you’d like to find out more, visit us here
